There is quite a list of Revolutionary War soldiers and patriots in the great state of Alabama. There are some names not on the list, likely because their graves are virtually lost at this date.
To mind come the names of John Menefee buried in his family cemetery in Athens, Alabama, and Absalom Looney buried on what is now government land in Madison County, Alabama. The DAR marked the grave of John Menefee (Revolutionary War soldier and first judge of the newly formed county Cotaco); it has been vandalized and forgotten. Absalom Looney's grave is also in a family cemetery, but may be lost or is inaccessible now. Constitution WeekThe aim of the celebration is three-fold:
Daughters are descendants of American Revolutionary patriots who are dedicated, active women committed to community service, committed to the preservation of American history, committed to the better education of children, and, additionally, we honor and support those who serve our nation. The celebration's goal is to celebrate and educate our communities about the Constitution annually during Constitution Week, including the background of some of the heroes who were in the heat of battle to obtain the freedom of our nation and its people's. |
